Ankle Sprains, “Can you treat that?”

Probably the most frequent question I have been asked as a Chiropractor is “do you treat that?”  Although to me it seems a funny question, most people don’t know the full range of conditions that we can treat as a Chiropractor.  One of the most common injuries I hear this question about is the ankle sprain, “Do you treat that?”

The answer is YES, and we are very good at it.

Ankle sprains are a very common injury, not just in sports, but to everyone.  Most sprains happen when an ankle is twisted during walking, running, jumping etc. When a sprain occurs the ankle will very often swell and become bruised. Additionally, the ligaments can be torn and scar tissue will also form. Ankle injuries can take a long time to recover. Generally, if it is the first injury to the ankle, you can expect a 4-6 week recovery period and even longer on repeat injuries. If you leave the ankle untreated, you are more likely to have repeat injuries down the road.

There have been a lot of studies showing how adjusting the ankle after a sprain is beneficial, here is one of my favorites.

The efficacy of adjusting the ankle in inversion sprains.

To most people it comes down to; can this help me?

Again the answer is YES.

I’ve found in practice that when an acute ankle sprain (Grade I and II) is adjusted along with soft tissue release the athlete can return to play much sooner. If you’ve suffered from an injury and want to see how our unique approach can help give us a call. 801-893-1010.
