The basics

What It Is & How Common It Is

Construction, warehouse work, healthcare, landscaping, parenting, yardwork and home projects can cause sudden strains or gradually overload the back, neck, shoulders and limbs.

Physical jobs and everyday lifting vary too much for one technique to prevent every injury. Smaller loads, assistance, equipment, task rotation and changing the work setup may matter as much as body position. The evaluation connects symptoms to the actual job or home task and measures movement, strength, endurance and readiness to resume duties safely.

Common questions

Lifting & Physical Work Pain FAQs

Did I injure my back because I lifted incorrectly?

Not necessarily. Load, repetition, fatigue, available space, previous injury, recovery and unexpected movement all influence risk. One perfect technique does not prevent every injury.

Should I stop working completely when something hurts?

Complete rest is not always necessary. Temporary task modification, smaller loads, assistance or shorter work periods may allow safe activity while symptoms settle.

Can you help me prepare to return to physical work?

When appropriate, the plan can progress movement, strength, endurance, carrying and job-specific tasks so the return is based on function rather than time alone.

When does a lifting injury need imaging?

Imaging may be appropriate after major trauma or with progressive weakness, numbness, severe unrelenting pain or other findings that suggest it would change care.

What symptoms require urgent medical attention?

Seek urgent help for major trauma, deformity, rapidly worsening weakness or numbness, chest pain, breathing difficulty, fever or new bowel or bladder changes.
